I'm Planning To Purchase a Bike—How Do I Get Cheap Motorcycle Insurance?

Need Cheaper Insurance?

When you make any major purchase, such as a car, a home, or a motorcycle, you need the right type of insurance so that your purchase can be protected.

While finding cheap motorcycle insurance is important in today's financial climate, it's also important to think about the various types of insurance that are available, and come to the right conclusions about what you need before you get started.

Lots of people choose motorcycles as their transportation because bikes are easier to use than some other types of transportation. Many people enjoy riding motorcycles as a hobby.

They use less gasoline, take up less space, and emit fewer pollutants and greenhouse gases. For these and other reasons, motorcycles are quite popular.

There are many things that you'll want to consider before you purchase a motorcycle, and it is important to remember that these things might affect your insurance rates significantly. Therefore, do some research and be sure that you're buying the right bike for you.

How To Lower the Cost of Your
Motorcycle Insurance Rates

Some types of motorcycles require a motorcycle license. Motor scooters can be driven on a regular license, but you'll need a motorcycle license to drive bikes with larger engines.

Consider taking a motorcycle training class before you buy the bike and get your license. Often, a certificate can lower your insurance rates. A clean driving record will usually get you a lower rate as well.

Another thing to consider is the motorcycle that you own or will be buying. Some brands of bikes and some specific motorcycle types have higher insurance rates. "Crotch Rockets" and other types of bikes meant for speed might have higher insurance rates than motorbikes meant for show or for hobby or pleasure riding, or collecting.

Once you have a bike, you'll want to consider several other aspects before you go about finding cheap motorcycle insurance.

Cheap Motorcycle Insurance—
What To Look for and/or Do

As mentioned above, consider taking a safety or training course, no matter what your current level of expertise.

The auto insurance company you deal with might have low-cost motorcycle insurance included in your policy. Or they might provide a discount for this additional policy.

However, be sure that the insurance you buy isn't just insurance to protect you if you get into an accident. Motorcycles can be damaged much easier than cars because they can be tipped over and because they are more susceptible to outdoor elements.

So when you are buying motorcycle insurance, be sure that you are getting insurance that covers your bike in an accident and if it's damaged from another source, like an accident that wasn't your fault.

What Else Should Insurance for Motorcycles Cover?

Also make sure that the motorcycle insurance policy you get includes theft of your bike, because this could happen as well.

It is also important to see that your passengers are covered for any injuries that occur in an accident.

Also look at the way that the insurance plan covers your bike—when you're riding, and when you aren't riding—to be sure that the coverage fits how often and when you use your bike and while storing it for the winter (if that applies). You don't want to pay for driving insurance if the bike is locked in a warehouse for 4-6 months each year.

There are lots of different cheap motorcycle insurance rates. It's a matter of finding the one that best suits your needs. Of course, the more choices, the more confusing!

Be sure to regularly pay your policy fees when they're due, so that you're always covered.

Important: Please be sure to get a warranty on your newly purchased bike. If your motorcycle isn't what it should be after its purchase, you may have a lemon motorcycle on your hands. For more information on how to be compensated for lemon motorcycles, click this link.
